How NDIS Plan-Managed and Self-Managed Clients Can Access Speech Therapy

By Melissa Walsh·22 April 2026·4 views
## Understanding NDIS and Speech Therapy The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) can fund speech pathology services for eligible participants — but the way you access those services depends on how your plan is managed. At Luna Speech Pathology, we work with **NDIS plan-managed and self-managed clients**. We are not a registered NDIS provider, which means we cannot work with agency-managed clients. If you are unsure how your plan is managed, check your NDIS plan document or contact your NDIS planner or Local Area Coordinator (LAC). --- ## What Is the Difference Between Plan Types? There are three ways an NDIS plan can be managed: **Agency-Managed (NDIA-Managed)** The NDIA pays providers directly. You can only use registered NDIS providers. Luna Speech Pathology is not available under this plan type. **Plan-Managed** A plan manager handles the financial side of your plan. You can use both registered and unregistered providers — including Luna Speech Pathology. Your plan manager pays us directly after we invoice them. **Self-Managed** You manage your own funding and pay providers directly, then claim reimbursement from the NDIS portal. You have the most flexibility and can use any provider, including Luna Speech Pathology. --- ## What Does NDIS Fund for Speech Therapy? Speech pathology is typically funded under the **Capacity Building — Improved Daily Living** support category (CB Daily Activity, formerly 07_002_0106_6_3). This can cover: - Initial assessment and report writing - Individual therapy sessions (in-person or telehealth) - Home programme development and parent/carer training - Review and progress reports The exact funding available depends on your individual plan goals and the supports your planner has approved. --- ## How to Get Started with Luna Speech Using Your NDIS Funding If you are plan-managed or self-managed, here is how the process works: **Step 1 — Check your plan** Confirm that your plan includes Capacity Building funding under Improved Daily Living. If you are unsure, contact your plan manager or LAC. **Step 2 — Make an enquiry** Contact us via our booking form or call 0412 325 934. Let us know you are an NDIS participant and how your plan is managed. **Step 3 — We send a service agreement** Before therapy begins, we will send you a service agreement outlining the supports we will provide, the cost per session, and the cancellation policy. **Step 4 — Therapy begins** We come to your home, school, or daycare — wherever works best for you and your child. After each session, we invoice your plan manager (plan-managed) or you claim directly through the NDIS portal (self-managed). --- ## How Much Do Sessions Cost? Our fees are aligned with the NDIS Price Guide for speech pathology services. We will confirm the current rate when you make an enquiry, as the NDIS Price Guide is updated periodically. --- ## Frequently Asked Questions **Can I use my NDIS funding even if I do not have a diagnosis yet?** You need to be an NDIS participant with an active plan that includes speech pathology funding. A formal diagnosis is not always required for NDIS access, but your plan goals should reflect a need for communication support. **Do I need a referral?** No referral is needed to access Luna Speech Pathology. You can contact us directly. **What areas do you service?** We provide mobile speech therapy across Newcastle and the Central Coast, including home, school, and daycare visits. Telehealth is also available for clients across NSW. **What if my plan does not have enough funding?** We can discuss your goals and work within your available funding. If additional funding is needed, we can provide a report to support a plan review request. --- ## Ready to Get Started? If you are a plan-managed or self-managed NDIS participant in Newcastle or the Central Coast, we would love to hear from you. Fill out our enquiry form and we will be in touch within one business day.
